Fishing Trip For Our Sales Team

Our 2018 annual Sales Meeting was a blast!

B&L Pipeco Services had their annual Sales Meeting at Bay Flats Lodge Resort & Marina this past week. We had record number 43 employees between our supply chain and sales teams attend. The fishing was exceptional, with some of our teams coming back with their limits and beautiful 27” Reds! We enjoyed spending a few days out on the water getting to know some of our newest members. While we always enjoy having fun, we worked together as a team during our meetings coming up with new ideas and goals for 2018. With so many young minds at work our outlook is endless. BLPS has an exciting future ahead of us and we can’t wait to share it with our customers and vendors. We are looking forward to helping lead the industry to a better market in 2018!

The Legendary Palmer Cup

BLPS Annual Golf Tournament in memory of Ken Palmer

It’s an event that dates back to the earliest of times, 2010. The Palmer Cup was named in memory of the legendary Ken Palmer. He was a pipe legend and a Pipeco partner. Ken Palmer loved to sell pipe, play golf, and enjoy the occasional martini! Every year B&L Pipeco Services gathers their sales team for a round of golf in his memory. The legendary Palmer Cup trophy travels throughout the office to the winners of the tournament. We enjoy the day team building, perfecting our golf game, and reminiscing the memories of the pipe days with Ken Palmer.

A Million Feet of USS-EAGLE SFH™ Sold!

U.S. Steel Recognizes B&L Pipeco Services for Selling a Million Feet of USS-EAGLE SFH™

On January 22nd B&L Pipeco Services had the honor of being recognized for selling a million feet of U.S. Steel’s EAGLE SFH™ Premium OCTG Connection. The USS-EAGLE SFH™ premium connection is a new generation of casing connection that is designed for horizontal, clearance critical well designs requiring high performance semi-flush connections with maximum torque capacity.

Hard work was put in by both U.S. Steel and B&L Pipeco over the last couple of years to hit a million feet sold. We thank USS for developing a reliable high-performance connection. This was a great accomplishment for both parties. B&L Pipeco strives to support all our mills in the OCTG industry with hard work, transparency, and trust.

Happy Retirement Craig and Donnie!

BLPS celebrated the retirement of Craig and Donnie at Main Street Crossing this past Tuesday!

B&L Pipeco Services said goodbye to two immaculate employees, our CFO Craig Wilkins and our Sr. VP of Supply Chain Donnie Joiner. While we wish them the best of life outside the office, we will be missing them within the office. Both of these men have dedicated so much value to help develop BLPS to what it is today.

We will miss them greatly! Congratulations Donnie and Craig!

CRAIG WILKINS
CFO

With 42 years in the industry, Craig Wilkins brings a wealth of experience to B&L Pipeco Services. He started his career as a Property Accountant at General Crude Oil Company in 1976, and advanced to positions as Accounting Supervisor and Joint Interest Supervisor at Houston Oil & Minerals. After performing nearly a decade of services for Tenneco Oil Company as a Property/Joint Interest Supervisor and Revenue Supervisor, Mr. Wilkins began a 24-year stint at Devon Energy as an Assistant Controller in their International, Gulf Coast & Southern Divisions. Attending the University of Texas at Austin, Mr. Wilkins obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting in 1976 and became a CPA in 1983. Craig held the role as CFO at Pipeco Services – B&L Pipeco for the past 6 years. He helped expand our knowledge, grow the company, and most of all kept us in line. Craig always came in with a smile on his face and knew the way to brighten your day. We are honored to call Craig a colleague and friend and wish him well on his many adventures in retirement! Congratulations!

DONNIE JOINER
SR. VP OF SUPPLY CHAIN

With over 35 years in the industry, Donnie Joiner’s experience expands across a variety of services in OCTG. He began his career in Oil and Gas by spending 3 years as a Drilling Fluid Engineer for the NL Baroid in Saudi Arabia.

Upon his return to the U.S., Mr. Joiner continued to advance in the OCTG industry through inside sales positions with Premier Pipe for 12 years and then on to Bourland and Leverich for the 17 years before becoming COO/VP. After the merge to B&L Pipeco Services, he was granted the position as Sr. VP of Supply Chain. Donnie has been with Bourland and Leverich – B&L Pipeco for a combined 19 years. His laughter could be heard through the hallways – and let us tell you, it’s a laugh you will never forget. Donnie is an absolutely brilliant man that would take the time to sit down and educate fellow colleagues on his theories. He was astounding at his job and a great colleague and friend to everyone at B&L Pipeco. We will miss him, but wish him the best as he goes into retirement! Congratulations!

B&L Pipeco Services participated in the 2019 Gulf Coast Oilmen’s Invitational in Galveston, Texas over the weekend of May 16th. This was the 30th year of Gulf Coast Oilmen helping the Shriners Burn Hospital – Galveston. B&L Pipeco Services’ Sr. VP of Sales Gene Hunt and Outside Salesman Phil Masser both sit on the board for Gulf Coast Oilmen. This event is one of their most notable events, helping give back to the numerous burn victims that arrive at Shriners Hospital for Children. What Keeps You Up at Night?

Customer Inventory Management Solutions (CIMS)

B&L Pipeco Services is always striving to expand our services to help better serve our customers. We began asking the question to executives and managers across the industry “What keeps you up at night?”, what are those work stressors that keep your mind in a panic (besides your spouse or kids). While there were many answers there was one that was the most consistent, field inventory management. With high activity and striving to keep production rates up, operators found little time to manage all aspects of field inventory. Traceability of field inventory was lost; maintenance of the stock was neglected, and items became obsolete or unusable. Often this resulted in buying new instead of utilizing items stored in many inventory locations. If joint venture audits took exception to tangible charges it was difficult and mostly impossible to easily resolve the queries.

We began to do some research, speak to a few experts, and even contracted specialists. We tossed around ideas trying to come up with a service that would tie all our customers’ needs together. This is when the project CIMS was born, Customer Inventory Management Solutions. BLPS built a service that is completely customizable and tailored to match each customer’s specific and unique needs. Our goal is to handle the day-to-day tactical work so you can focus on your core business: drilling wells. We assembled a team of experienced professionals who excel in the areas of yard and materials management, supply chain management and procurement, finance and accounting, audit and assurance, COPAS guidelines and insight, logistics management, market and pricing analytics, valuation, and best-in-class advisory services. All these functions are within our wheelhouse that we successfully handle every single day.

CIMS includes, but is not limited to the following:

Inventory Management

Physical counts & reconciliations
Ensure utilization of customer stock
Manage repairs, inspections, and maintenance of goods
Liquidations of obsolete and junk material
Inventory tracking & material transfers
Logistics management

Well Support & Audit Assurance

Daily monitoring of OCTG rig/well activity
Detailed well reconciliations
Ensure accurate AFE/Well charges
JV Audit Exception Support and Responses
COPAS guidelines assistance and compliance

Standardized Metrics & Reporting

Inventory stock on-hand reports
Transaction history
Reconciliation reports
Performance metrics

Valuation & Advisory Services

Implement best-in-class procedures
Assess the condition & value of inventory
Identify cost reduction and opportunities

Increases/ decreases in the rig count, the “bullwhip effect”, forecasting issues, seasonality, unforeseen changes to the drilling schedule, human error, budget limitations, project cancellations, operational issues that now require something different… there are a million valid reasons for how and why inventory can quickly get out of hand. Our CIMS team can help improve your company’s operational efficiencies and inventory management issues by implementing best practices, lean principles and the willingness to roll up our sleeves and do the manual daily work that takes up most of your time.

This service seems complex and quite frankly it is. But here at B&L Pipeco, we deal with complexity on the daily, so we are used to handling service of this difficulty! We decided to begin with a case study. In early 2018, B&L Pipeco Services and WPX Energy began a discussion about how we could provide greater support to their Supply Chain operations. After an assessment and review of their current operations, WPX allowed BLPS to conduct a six-month case study on how our new CIMS team could help provide support to their Permian Operations. The project went better than expected.

“It’s great to have professionals manage this… Mistakes are caught early…. Open communication and flexibility have been instrumental to success… The cost is very worthwhile for a service that is difficult to find in-house or outside.” – WPX Energy

While our core business is OCTG – CIMS is not built for just pipe. From surface equipment to pumping units, our supply chain and accounting professionals can help. Our goal is to work hard and provide solid results so your company can focus on what matters most. This service can be utilized for any tangible asset.

B&L Pipeco Services provides:

Unmatched industry experience
Ability to identify and fix problems
Implementation of best practices
Ability to communicate to all levels
Improved operational efficiencies
Intangible future-benefits

This is what we do best. We can professionally control your inventory and perform the required mechanical tasks so you can have the freedom to fix your attention elsewhere.

B&L Pipeco Services ESG Scavenger Hunt Luncheon

We have been putting together our ESG program for a while now and one of our goals was increasing company involvement and education. We have tasked our sub committees to come up with company wide events throughout the year to spark the conversation about sustainability and they have delivered!

Yesterday we had our first company ESG event, the ESG Scavenger Hunt Luncheon. Our Governance Team organized a fun filled day with a competitive scavenger hunt, delicious food and prizes!

We started off by splitting up into our teams, received a quick rundown of the rules, then it was game on. While sprinting all over our building we had to capture a picture of all the items on our list then race back to the judges table to solve a riddle. Team 3 was the overall champion winning $100 Visa gift card, Team 9 coming in a close second receiving recycled Gil T-shirts and Team 6 finishing in third place receiving a $50 Visa gift card.

We wrapped up with a delicious lunch by the local restaurant Martha’s Mexican Restaurant, where we just got to relax and catch up with our work family.

The day was filled with team bonding, laughing, and learning all about ESG. This was the first time in a long time our Houston office was able to get everyone together like this since COVID proving again just how wonderful this group really is. A very successful first ESG event out of many more to come, stay tuned to see what we have going on next!

Giving Back One Tree at a Time

This week we had the opportunity to work with one of our local parks, Sheldon Lake State Park. Only fifteen minutes from downtown Houston this park has a lake, ponds, wetlands, woods and prairie where you can enjoy hiking, fishing, and paddling. You will also see everything from birds to alligators, prairie grasses to wildflowers, trees to aquatic plants, and butterflies to grasshoppers.

With European settlement, farms and ranches replaced much of the prairie and almost all the marshlands here. Over time urban development surrounded the park. This reduces runoff and leads to lower water quality. The ponds and Sheldon Lake depend on rain and runoff for their life-giving water. These bodies of water provide natural storage for floodwaters and habitat for aquatic plants. Aquatic plants filter pollutants from the water and in turn provide habitat for many other species (fish, birds, insects and more). Without this healthy and abundant habitat, plant and wildlife diversity would continue to decline.

Park staff and volunteers continuously work to protect the surrounding watershed so that Sheldon Lake State Park can conserve this beautiful coastal prairie. To help keep this area and its wildlife thriving restoration of the tall grass prairie in the park began in 2003, by planting native trees, grasses, and aquatic plants. This, along with weeding, mowing and controlled burns, will restore these habitats over time.

We are very proud of our group of volunteers who planted 106 native plants back into the prairie to help restore the natural habitat in the Texas heat. Way to go guys!

This was such an amazing experience to give back to our community and keep Houston beautiful!

Renewell – Oil Wells that End Well

B&L Pipeco Services is excited to announce the successful completion of our first pilot test with Renewell on a recently plugged idle well in North Texas!

Renewell is a new clean energy storage startup founded in 2020. Their mission is to clean up and convert hundreds of thousands of idle wells into highly flexible gravitational energy storage. The company was founded by Kemp Gregory, Stefan Streckfus who are both graduates from Stanford’s Atmosphere & Energy Program, along with Walker Colt who graduated from Rice University’s executive MBA program.

The EPA estimates there are approximately 2 million abandoned oil wells in the United States and experts believe nearly half of those are orphaned wells. The recently passed 2 trillion-dollar infrastructure bill earmarks approximately 16 billion dollars toward the clean-up of these orphaned wells. Renewell plans on not only sealing and cleaning-out these inactive wells, but also repurposing them into potential energy storage and production sites. Renewell will plan on using their regenerative winch Artemis Prime to raise and lower a cylindrical weight in the repurposed well to produce energy when the grid needs it most.

B&L Pipeco would also like to give a special thanks to PCDworks and Native State Environmental for all of their hard work in bringing everyone together for this endeavor.

B&L Pipeco Services OCTG Supply Chain Game

Supply Chain Management Group: Ryan Braun, Mike Mayse, Tracey Gallo, JP Brown, Traci Sproat, Matt Barnard, John Stewart, and Leo Romo

Our Spark Supply Chain Management group hosted their big event, BLPS OCTG Supply Chain Game. Each quarter one of our Spark, employee led, sub committees host a companywide event to increase company involvement and education of sustainability principle objectives.

Teams working on their strategy.

Employees split into competing teams to play a board game. The objective of the game is to be the most efficient in managing the supply chain processes and issues distribution faces every day. Successfully managing OCTG supply chains while maintaining inventories levels to fulfill all customer rig demands is essential to our industry. Various “real life roadblocks” such as trucks with flat tires, icy road conditions, and engineering design changes were spontaneously thrown their way to simulate unforeseen problems.

Let the games begin!

The game lasted for “32 weeks.” The team able to meet all demands without penalties was recognized as the winners! Team 1 came out victorious and won $100 Visa Gift Card each! Congratulations to: Perla Orozco, Brent Altazin, Gene Hunt, Michelle Allen, Kim Hyslop, Arnold Garcia and Ashley Jimerson.
